How to Play Strands

Strands is a daily word search puzzle from The New York Times family of games. At StrandsGame.online, we bring you the same addictive word-finding experience — for free, with unlimited play!

The Basics

Each puzzle gives you a 6×8 grid of 48 letters and a theme clue. Your goal is to find all the theme words plus one special word called the Spangram.

How to Select Words

On Desktop: Click and drag across adjacent letters
On Mobile: Touch and swipe across adjacent letters
Letters can connect horizontally, vertically, or diagonally
You can turn corners — no straight line needed
Each word must be at least 4 letters long
Click Submit to check your word

Theme Words vs Spangram

Theme Words (blue): These are words related to the day's theme. Find them all to complete the puzzle.

Spangram (gold): This is the most important word! The Spangram:

Describes the overall theme of the puzzle
Spans from one edge of the grid to the opposite edge (left↔right or top↔bottom)
Is usually longer than the theme words (8-12 letters)
Turns gold/yellow when found
Finding the Spangram early makes the rest of the puzzle much easier!

Hint System

Stuck? The game helps you out:

Every 3 non-theme words you find earn you 1 hint
A hint reveals the first letter and length of a random unfound word
There's no penalty for wrong guesses — try anything!

🔄 Shuffle the grid to see letters from a fresh perspective
⭐ Find the Spangram first — it reveals the theme and makes other words obvious
📝 Brainstorm before you search: Read the theme and think of related words before scanning
🔍 Look at edge letters first — the Spangram must touch the edges
🎯 Use rare letters (Q, X, Z, J) as anchors — they have fewer neighbors, making them easier to spot in words
💡 Don't hoard hints — use them when you're stuck, they reset daily
